First contact with this peaceful land is generally San Jose, capital of the Republic.
San Jose is situated at a height of 1,149 meters above sea level and maintains an average temperature of 24°C with only two seasons: dry and rainy.
The dry season gives its first signs the beginning of November and it ends in the last days of April, when the rainy or green season begins.
We recommend consulting with a travel agency on the one day tours available from the Central Region to places like: the Poas and Irazu Volcanoes, the impressive Lankaster Garden for orchid lovers, or rafting the rapid waters of the Reventazon River.
You may also enjoy a cruise to the islands on the Pacific or a visit to the Braulio Carrillo National Park, where you can see nature from the treetops in the Aerial Tram.
There are a great variety of hotels so that you can just as easily stay at luxurious international chains, as well as welcoming "bed & breakfasts".
Tips
Most visitors to San Jose will fly directly to Juan Santamaria International Airport. Costa Rica's air services are excellent and offer daily flights to every province in the country.
The average daytime temperature is about 75°F. The rainy season begins in May and lasts to October with showers mostly during the evening. Mornings are fresh and sunny.
For traveling in the city, stick to comfortable light-weight cotton clothing. Long pants and long-sleeved shirts are interchangeable with shorts and tees, but carry a light jacket. A rain poncho is essential when visiting during the rainy season. Keep shoes as comfortable as possible for those walking city tours!
Fidel Tristan Jade Museum boasts a large collection of Jade jewelry, utensils and other artifacts. The central market located at the city’s epicenter is a good way to get acquainted with significant traditions such as natural medicine, local cuisine, handicraft and leather products.
The public transportation system is excellent in San Jose. You will find that routes crisscross the city at regular intervals and provide a safe and inexpensive mode of transportation. Pamphlets should be available from your travel agency. Taxi services are widely available and easily identifiable by a yellow triangle on their red door. They are relatively inexpensive and are worth considering when two or three are traveling together. Make sure you agree on a rate before you enter the cab. Car rental agencies are abundant! Conveniently located in the airport and on virtually every street corner. You can go for the standard car for the city use or the four- wheel drive vehicle when you want to go off the beaten path. |
