Bougainvillea Condominiums in Playa Conchal, Guanacaste.
Property details
Costa Rica Northern Region
During your trip, from San Jose toward the Northern Mountains and Plains, you will enjoy the view of several mountain chains, such as Guanacaste and Tilaran. They are separated by the Arenal reservoir, loved worldwide by windsurfers, and the small Cote lake that is shaped like a heart.

The Arenal Volcano is among its main attractions. Its shape is that of an almost perfect cone and presents a spectacular show of red lava eruptions that remind you of carnival fireworks contrasted against the dark night or dawn sky. Along with the Arenal Volcano you find the Arenal Reservoir. It is an artificial lake perfect for water sports like windsurfing because its winds reach up to 72 km per hour.

Another place of interest is Monteverde, a town whose history serves as an example for the whole world. Their first inhabitants were the Quakers that went into the mountain to settle what today is known as the singular town of Monteverde. The Quakers filled the area with a love of caring for the nature and the planet where we live.

Among the main activities to be done in Monteverde, you find guided walks, visits to the butterfly garden, orchid farm and the serpentarium. The bellbird is a host to all visitors, Their song can be heard from a distance of almost two kilometers. More than 36 hummingbird species are found and among those is the smallest hummingbird in the world.

Tips

Head north from San Jose towards the Caribbean coast, then take the exit towards Ciudad Quesada. By heading northwest, you'll find a variety of towns (and volcanoes) that will grab your attention on either side of the road.

The weather in this particular region tends to characterize itself with warm daytime temperatures (low to mid 80s) and relatively high humidity. There are intermittent rain showers that usually pass quickly. From late February to early May, the rains lessen in frequency and afford fantastic skyscapes during sunrise and sunset.

Necessary travel equipment for this region is simple. If you're visiting during the rainy season, keep rain gear handy and keep comfortable shoes on your feet when taking in the sights. Binoculars are mandatory when in the area since birdwatching is excellent.

Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is off the beaten track but will prove to be an interesting excursion on the river. By hooking up a tour operator, you will be provided with transportation on the river as well as with an excellent keen- eyed guide. Guides are essential to your trip through Caño Negro since many of the residents tend to be shy and quite adept at hiding in the vegetation. Sloths, otters, and caracaras are just a few of the animals you'll see.
